Level Up Your Prices: A New Year Reset for Stylists
Have You Updated Your Price List Yet?
A new year is usually the time when people want to revamp everything and start fresh — and that includes your service price list! If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to raise your prices (or how to do it), this post is for you.
Before you make any changes, here are 5 important things to consider when updating your service prices for the new year!
1. Cost of professional products and toolS
As professionals, we should be using quality, professional products and tools to give our clients the best results possible. And let’s be real — those products and tools are not cheap.
While some items can be found at beauty supply stores, most true professional products are purchased through professional suppliers and are meant to be used by licensed pros. Because you’re investing in high-quality products, your service prices should reflect that.
Make sure your prices:
✔ Cover the cost of what you use
✔ Still leave room for profit
Your clients should understand that quality products and tools contribute to the health and maintenance of their hair, skin, and nails — and those benefits are included in your price.
2. Cost of Your knowledge and skills
You have invested time, money, and effort into your craft!
You earned your license. You’ve taken classes. You’ve watched countless tutorials. You’ve practiced. You may have even offered discounted or free services just to perfect new skills.
All of that matters.
You must charge for your knowledge and skill.
Stop being afraid to charge what you’re worth! You don’t have to be outrageous — but don’t keep shorting yourself either.
If you’re offering high-quality services, you should be charging high-quality prices. Period.
3. cost of competition
Yes, charge what you’re worth — but also be aware of your competition. If your prices are way outside the normal range in your area, you could risk losing clients and income.
That said, cheaper doesn’t always mean better.
And higher doesn’t scare clients away if the value is there.
You can:
✔ Match your competition
✔ Charge slightly more
✔ Or charge slightly less
Just be confident in your work and make sure you’re offering an exceptional client experience so people clearly see why you’re worth your price.
Balance is key.
4. Cost of your atmosphere
Let’s talk about the atmosphere. Be honest with yourself:
Is your space clean, stylish, and comfortable?
Or is it unorganized and unprofessional?
Is your attitude positive and professional?
Do you look like a cosmetologist at work — or like you just rolled out of bed?
These things matter. A lot.
People will pay for quality.
Let me say it again: People will pay for quality.
You don’t have to own the fanciest salon suite in town, but you do need to offer:
✔ A clean and neat space
✔ A welcoming vibe
✔ Professional appearance
✔ Great customer service
When your atmosphere, attitude, and services all align, clients won’t mind paying high-quality prices.
But if those things aren’t in place yet, you may want to work on that before increasing your prices.
5. cost of salon perks
Do you offer extras that enhance the experience?
Maybe you provide:
Drinks and snacks
Extension hair included with services
Mobile or travel services
Complimentary treatments or add-ons
Those “salon perks” add value — and value can (and should) be reflected in your pricing.
Clients don’t mind paying for convenience and an elevated experience. Most will gladly do it!
I hope these 5 considerations help you feel more confident as you prepare to update your service prices. Remember: this isn’t just about charging more — it’s about charging fairly for the value, quality, and experience you provide.
Happy New Year!
May your clients grow, your success grow, and most of all…
may your pockets grow!!! 💰✨
