DIY facial products classroom activity

When We begin the Facials chapter, one of my absolute favorite things to do with my students is give them space to be creative. This lesson allows students to design, create, and use their own homemade facial product, and it never disappoints. They have so much fun with it, take real ownership of their learning, and genuinely enjoy the spa facial experience that follows.

This activity is engaging, student-centered, and the perfect mix of theory, creativity, and hands-on practice.

Lesson Procedures

Step 1: Assign the Facial Product Project

during the Facials chapter, I assign students a project where they create their own facial product. Students plan their product by answering the following Questions.

(Below is the information I post on the board)

Step 2: Ingredient Prep

After students complete the written portion of the assignment, they are instructed to bring their chosen ingredients to class the following class period.

Step 3: In-Class Product Creation

During the next class, students Create their homemade facial products

This is where the excitement really starts and students begin to see their ideas come to life.

Step 4: Product Presentations

Once everyone has completed their facial product, students present their product to the class by sharing their answers from the assignment.

Optional ways to switch it up:

  • Create a commercial or jingle

  • Design a slide presentation

  • Role-play as a brand representative

  • Pitch their product to the class

This step builds confidence, communication skills, and professionalism.

Step 5: Spa Facial Demonstration

After presentations, students:

  • Partner with another student

  • Demonstrate a spa facial

  • Incorporate their homemade facial product into the service

This gives students hands-on practice while reinforcing proper facial techniques and client care.

Why I Love This Lesson

I love this lesson because:

  • Students are fully engaged and excited

  • It allows creativity while reinforcing facial theory

  • Students gain confidence explaining products and ingredients

  • It feels like a real spa experience

  • The classroom energy is always positive and fun

It’s one of those lessons students remember long after the chapter is over.
