Attention Grabber Activity for effective classroom management

Check out this Helpful activity to do with your Cosmetology Students at the start of the year to help with proper classroom management.

While you are setting your classroom rules and expectations to help aid in a success school year, it’s always helpful to have a system in place for getting the attention of your students when the classroom gets busy or noisy! Lots of teachers may implement things like “If you can hear me clap once”, however,  I believe classroom management is more effective when you allow the students to be apart of creating the system! Allow your students to help set the expectations and watch them meet those expectations with less of a fight!! Have them to create their own classroom attention grabber and make sure to explain to the students the purpose of what they are creating and the importance of shifting their focus to you when they hear you say your part of the attention grabber! They should know to say their part and then get quiet, look at you, listen, and wait for instructions.

Cosmetology Attention Grabber Activity

Divide your students into small groups! Each group should be given 10 minutes (just an estimate) to create 3 Cosmetology related attention grabbers that consist of two parts. The first part will be for you to say, and the second part will be for the students to say. For example, You might say “Hair, Nails, and Skin”  and your students would follow up with “We’re listening” . After they say their part of the attention grabber they should be ready to receive your instructions.

Once the timer goes off have each group to pick their favorite attention grabber out of the 3 they created, and direct one student from each group to write it on your white board. At this point you may go through each groups attention grabber with your class, practicing saying your part and allowing the students to say their part to hear how each one sounds! Once y’all have gone through each one, allow your class to vote on their favorite attention grabber!

Below are the classroom attention grabber Expectations that are posted for students to view while they work!

Once the attention grabber is chosen, review the expectations for what should happen each time you say your part! Immediately implement the attention grabber into your classroom system to get the students use to what should happen each time you say it! Sometimes you may have to repeat your part of the attention grabber a few time to fully get your classrooms attention, however  you should always reiterate the expectations if you find yourself repeating yourself to often! You may also want to create some sort of consequences for the class if you are constantly having to repeat your portion of the attention grabber to get the silence and the attention of your students that you are expecting.

More than likely, you will find this activity to be very effective and it allows your students to feel like they are apart of your team while setting the tone and expectations for your class!

Do you do this in your class already? If not, try it out and tell me what you think!!!❤️❤️❤️
