Milady chapter 1: History of cosmetology timeline activity… with a twist!

check out this fun and interactive way for your students to study the history of cosmetology with this timeline activity…with a twist!!

HAVE YOUR STUDENTS TO WORK WITH A PARTNER OR GROUP TO HELP CREATE A HISTORY OF COSMETOLOGY TIMELINE. I HAVE CREATED A FILL IN THE BLANK HANDOUT FOR NOTE TAKING PURPOSES. WHEN STUDENTS ARE PRESENTING, I FIND IT HELPFUL TO HAVE SOME SORT OF WRITING ACTIVITY TO GO ALONG WITH PRESENTATIONS SO THE STUDENT AUDIENCE IS MORE ENGAGED AND ATTENTIVE BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY HAVE TO LISTEN TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT! THIS HELPS GIVE THEM NOTES TO STUDY , WHILE ALSO HELPING ENSURE THEY ARE ENGAGED IN THE LESSON, EVEN DURING PRESENTATIONS.

THE FIRST PART OF THE ACTIVITY CONSIST OF PAIRING THE STUDENTS AND THEN ASSIGNING THEM A PARTICULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE OR an ERA IN COSMETOLOGY HISTORY. BASED ON WHAT GROUP THEY GET, THEY WILL THEN ANSWER THE CORRESPONDING QUESTIONS ON THE COSMETOLOGY HANDOUT THAT I CREATED. I choose to assign each group a set of questions on the handout so they are able to present and teach the information rather than just giving the class a handout and making everyone complete the entire handout independently. handouts can be boring and students retain information better when they have to get creative, teach, and engage! SEE SLIDE BELOW FOR GROUP INFORMATION.

ONCE STUDENTS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FILLED IN THEIR SET OF QUESTIONS THEY WILL BEGIN WORKING ON A GOOGLE SLIDE presentation that i will put together to create the final timeline. THE presentation SHOULD INCLUDE THEIR ASSIGNED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERs FROM THE HANDOUT. IT MUST ALSO INCLUDE 2 ADDITIONAL FACTS THAT THEY MUST RESEARCH ABOUT THEIR GROUP/ERA and 2 PICTURES.

Below I Have Included The Student Expectations Slide That Should Be Displayed On The Board As They Work! (Make Any Adjustments That Are Necessary For Your Classroom)

below is the link for the fill in the blank handout that i use. feel free to create your own or even use the milady workbook pages. (to create your own copy of my handout, click the link, click file, and then click make a copy)

(Below is an example of student work from a previous year. )

once every group has submitted their slide, i put all of the slides together in order to create the final class cosmetology timeline.

THe final part of the assignment is to give each group a Styrofoam head and allow them to create a representation of their specific group of people or era in cosmetology history. students are typically very creative with this part of the assignment and they really enjoy it. they use construction paper, yarn, glitter, markers, etc to create their representations.

i normally give them 1 full class period to get this portion of the assignment done and we begin presentations the following class period. Students must present their slide presentation along with their styrofoam representations. the class is instructed to complete their handout as each group presents.

I hope you try this fun activity and enjoy your history of cosmetology lesson! Let me know how it works.
