MILADY CHAPTER 2: LIFE SKILLS ACTIVITIES

CHECK OUT THESE SHORT, EFFECTIVE, AND ENGAGING LIFE SKILLS ACTIVITIES TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR CHAPTER 2 LESSON!

BELOW I HAVE COMBINED MY LESSON ACTIVITIES FROM THE COURSE OF A 2-3 WEEK TIME FRAME (I SEE MY INTRO STUDENTS EVERY OTHER DAY!) INTO 1 GOOGLE SLIDE PRESENTATION FOR YOUR convenience. UNDER THE PRESENTATION I WILL PROVIDE BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OR DIRECTIONS FOR EACH ACTIVITY!

WHY STUDY LIFE SKILLS!

AS AN INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY WE DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING LIFE SKILLS IN COSMETOLOGY. I THEN HAVE MY STUDENTS TO CREATE A LIST OF LIFE SKILLS (PRINCIPLES) THEY BELIEVE ARE NECESSARY FOR SOMEONE TO BE CONSIDERED A TRUSTWORTHY AND ETHICAL INDIVIDUAL/EMPLOYEE. YOU MAY HAVE THEM TO DO THIS INDEPENDENTLY ON A SHEET OF PAPER, DISCUSS IT WITH A PARTNER, OR discuss WITH A PARTNER AND WRITE DOWN THEIR RESPONSES. AFTERWARDS, WE DISCUSS THEIR ANSWERS AND THEN DISCUSS THE “LIFE SKILLS IN ACTION” BULLET POINTS FROM THE MILADY TEXT.

The Psychology of success!!

AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS SECTION, I PAIR THE STUDENTS OFF AND HAVE THEM CONDUCT INTERVIEWS ABOUT WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE FOR THEIR PARTNER. THE STUDENTS MUST RECORD THEIR PARTNERS RESPONSES AND ONCE THE TIMER GOES OFF, I HAVE EVERYONE SHARE THEIR PARTNERS DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. FOLLOWING THE INTERVIEWS, WE DISCUSS THE “ACTION STEPS FOR SUCCESS” ACCORDING TO MILADY AND THEN I HAVE EVERYONE WRITE DOWN 5 ACTION STEPS THEY PLAN TO INCORPORATE INTO THEIR LIFE IN ORDER TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL!

AFTER THIS ACTIVITY, I HAVE THEM TO USE THEIR TEXTBOOK TO complete the following:

-List and define the 3 bad habits that will prevent you from maintaining peak performance.

ONCE THE TIMER GOES OFF, I CONDUCT A CLASSROOM DISCUSSION OVER THIS INFORMATION.

MANAGING YOUR CAREER

I ALWAYS START THIS PORTION OF THE LESSON BY HAVING THE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE THE INTEREST SELF TEST IN THE TEXTBOOK. THIS WILL BE USEFUL FOR ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES. ONCE THEY HAVE TAKEN THE INTEREST SELF TEST, WE DISCUSS THEIR RESULTS.

I THEN ASK THE STUDENTS TO Think about THEIR favorite place AND Look up the MISSION STATEMENT for that place. (It can be a restaurant, grocery store, clothing store, etc.) ONCE THE TIMER GOES OFF WE SHARE THE MISSION STATEMENTS AND I CONDUCT A DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT ALL OF THE MISSION STATEMENTS HAVE IN COMMON. I ALSO ASK THEM WHAT THEY BELIEVE THE PURPOSE OF A MISSION STATEMENT IS.

THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITY IS FOR THEM TO CREATE THEIR OWN PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENTS THAT COMMUNICATES WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY WANT OUT OF LIFE.

GOAL SETTING

THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS LESSON CONSIST OF ASKING THE STUDENTS TO DEFINE GOAL SETTING AND DISCUSSING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM GOALS.

AFTERWARDS, I HAVE THEM TO WRITE DOWN 2 SHORT TERM AND 2 LONG TERM GOALS. WE SHARE AND DISCUSS!

TIME MANAGEMENT

I INTRODUCE THIS LESSON BY HAVING ALL STUDENTs TO STAND UP AND CLOSE THEIR EYES. I START A 30 SECOND TIMER ON MY PHONE AND TELL THEM TO HAVE A SEAT WHEN THEY BELIEVE 30 SECONDS HAS PASSED BY. ONCE EVERYONE IS SEATED I ASK THEM WHAT THEY BELIEVE THE PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY IS. (THE PURPOSE IS TO SHOW HOW EVERYONE IS NOT AWARE OF TIME AND HOW TIME LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE.)

WE THEN FOLLOW UP WITH A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME MANAGEMENT AND HOW it IS IMPORTANT IN THE SALON!

THE NEXT ACTIVITY IS THE “TEAM SURVIVOR CHALLENGE” (refer to slide presentation). THE STUDENTS ARE PUT INTO GROUPS AND THEN I WILL BEGIN READING THE SCENARIO TO THEM IN A VERY “CATCHY” KIND OF WAY TO GAIN THEIR ATTENTION. ONCE I HAVE READ IT I TELL THEM TO LIST THE ITEMS THEY WILL NEED TO SURVIVE FROM MOST IMPORTANT TO LEAST IMPORTANT! ONCE THE TIMER GOES OFF, WE DISCUSS THE ORDER OF THEIR LIST, THE PURPOSE OF THE ACTIVITY, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PRIORITIZING! I THEN REVIEW THE “EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MANAGE TIME” bullet POINTs from THE MILADY TEXT.

THE LAST ACTIVITY FOR THIS SECTION IS THE “my daily schedule” WORKSHEET THAT I CREATED. the directions are on the activity and should be clear and precise. (LINK IS POSTED BELOW) (to create your own copy, click the link, click file, and then click make a copy)

study skills

for the introduction to study skills, i post the list on milady under “employ successful learning tools” (refer to the slide presentation) and have the students to write down each skill from the list that they need to improve on. this is followed by a class discussion.

next, we discuss how to establish good study habits using the tips from the milady text. that is followed by the “establishing good study habits activity” (Refer to the slide presentation) and a class discussion.

ethics/personality development and attitude

i introduce this section by having the students to provide examples of ethical behavior. that conversation is followed by a discussion about the importance of having a positive attitude. i always make sure to provide real life examples when we have class discussions.

i then put my students into small groups and assign each group a term or phrase from the personality development and attitude section of the text. (refer to the google slide presentation above for the group slide and directions that should be posted on the board while the students work.) the students must create a skit about their assigned term, its meaning, and how to properly demonstrate it in a salon setting! they must also create a 2 slide presentation that includes their skit on the first slide and their term, definition/description, and an image to match on the second slide.

once each group performs their short skit, the audience must attempt to guess the term they were displaying! the group will then follow up with their second slide that reveals their term. they will take this time to teach their term and definition to the class. the class is required to take notes for each word!

conclusion

THESE ARE ACTUALLY JUST THE MAIN ACTIVITIES THAT I DO IN MY CLASSROOM FOR CHAPTER 2. FOR EACH LESSON I HAVE OTHER FILLER ACTIVITIES THAT WE MAY DO IN BETWEEN SUCH AS MILADY SITUATIONAL PROBLEMS, KAHOOTS, QUIZIZZ, FLASHCARD REVIEWS, 1O MIN STUDY SESSIONS, CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS, ETC..

once we have completed all of these activities we take the chapter 2 test and begin chapter 3.

I HOPE YOU FIND THESE ACTIVITIES HELPFUL! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!💕💕💕
