salon safety and first aid lesson

Salon safety and first aid may not always be the most fun lesson to teach. so how do you make this lesson fun in your class?….check out this lesson for a fun and creative way to teach safety and first aid in the salon!

when i teach salon safety and first aid i typically use the salon fundamentals lesson slides to help teach my lesson. This is one of my most unoriginal lesson slides (i typically create all of my lesson slides myself) however, i find it very easy to use and teach from, and i of course my partner and I always create activities of our own to go along with every lesson.

SALON SAFETY INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY

We like to open our lesson with a video that displays unsafe salon conditions (Typically a news clip). Below is the Most recent video we showed our students for this lesson. (THe link is in the lesson slide)

We follow the video with a brief discussion about the concerns they would have if they were clients in these salons. this conversation leads us to the first salon fundamental slides of the presentations. The students will identify the salon concerns or hazard displayed in the photos. we follow up with a discussion between the difference between concerns, hazards, and safety rules.

SALON SAFETY ACTIVITY

THE FIRST ACTIVITY FOR STUDENTS TO COMPLETE IS THE SALON SAFETY ACTIVITY. STUDENTS MUST WRITE 3 SAFETY CONCERNS THAT COULD TAKE PLACE IN A SALON, ALONG WITH THE HAZARDS, AND SAFETY RULES THAT SHOULD GO ALONG WITH THOSE CONCERNS.

UPON COMPLETION OF THIS ASSIGNMENT, STUDENTS MUST CHOOSE THEIR TOP CONCERN ALONG WITH THE CORRESPONDING, HAZARD, AND SAFETY RULE AND TYPE IT ONTO A STIKY NOTE ON JAMBOARD USING THE LINK PROVIDED TO THEM. I HAVE ATTACHED AN EXAMPLE FROM MY CLASS JAMBOARD BELOW!

ONCE EVERYONE HAS POSTED THEIR STICKY NOTES, WE REVIEW THEM AS A CLASS AND ENSURE THAT THEY ARE ALL CORRECT AND RELEVANT TO THE SALON SETTING. DURING THE PRESENTATIONS NO ONE CAN HAVE THE SAME SAFETY CONCERN, HAZARD, AND RULE. IF THEY DO WE WILL THINK OF ANOTHER set THAT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN DISPLAYED SO AT THE END of the lesson EVERY STUDENT HAS THEIR OWN. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE NEXT ACTIVITY!

SALON SAFETY POSTER

ONCE EACH STUDENT HAS THEIR OWN CONCERN, HAZARD, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SAFETY RULE, WE HAVE THE STUDENTS TO CREATE A SALON SAFETY POSTER. (THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSTERS ARE IN THE SLIDE PRESENTATION.) WE ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO PRESENT THEIR POSTERS ONCE THEY ARE DONE AND THEN WE TAKE THEM INTO THE SALON AND ALLOW THEM TO POST THE SAFETY POSTERS NEATLY ON THE WALL!

THE FINAL SALON SAFETY ACTIVITY IS A QUICK DO NOW! I HAVE THEM TO READ A SHORT SITUATIONAL PROBLEM THAT I CREATED AND then discuss tHE answers to the QUESTIONS TOGETHER AS A CLASS.

First Aid

for the first aid portion of the lesson we simply discuss the first aid measures as a class using the salon fundamentals slides and complete the short quick checks and activities that are included in the slides. we then follow up with the salon fundamentals first aid video that quickly recaps everything that we discussed.
