salon duties in the student salon

how are you ensuring that your students are completing their salon duties? try implementing these salon duty procedures for an effective duty time in your school’s salon!

we all know how important it is to keep the salon spick and span! It is our duty to teach our students how to be professionals in the salon, and one key point to professionalism in the salon is maintaining an overall clean, neat, and organized salon! So how do you implement duty procedures into your classrooms AND ENSURE THAT EVERYONE IS DOING THEIR PART?

(yes, we do actually play this clean up music everyday as the students clean the salon. they get use to it. they eventually begin singing, dancing, and cleaning!)

AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, AFTER ALL OF THE TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITiES BUT BEFORE WE ACTUALLY GET INTO practicals, WE ALWAYS TEACH SALON SAFETY AND FIRST AID (check out my salon safety and first aid lesson blog post if you haven’t already) foLLOWING THIS LESSON WE GO STRAIGHT INTO DUTY PROCEDURES.

salon Inspection activity

we start our duty procedures lesson with a student salon inspection with the salon being in whatever state it was left in after returning from summer break (typically pretty bad because the custodians are moving everything around in preparation for stripping the floors for the upcoming school year!)

to conduct the salon inspection we typically break the students up in pairs and give them a list of the different areas in the salon to inspect. they must take notes of every infraction they notice while in the different areas of the salon. We give them a few minutes in each area and have the pairs to rotate every time the timer goes off until each pair has visited every area listed to inspect. once the inspection is complete, we review what was discovered and conduct a conversation over the importance of maintaining a clean, disinfected, neat, and organized salon. we also explain how real inspectors will visit our salon at least twice each school year unannounced and how important it is for us to always be in compliance!

duty training

we then follow up with what we call “duty training” (which we also conduct in the salon). during this time we give each student a fill in the blank handout with every salon duty on it! we present a powerpoint presentation and go over each duty and the steps that should be taken to ensure that every duty is done correctly! we also conduct demonstrations of certain cleaning/disinfection procedures at this time. we ensure that every student knows how to mix mar-v-cide, how to launder the towels, disinfection procedures for pedicure spas (including after each client, end of day, and bi-weekly), how to log the disinfection of the pedicure spas, etc..

below i have attached our duty fill in the blank sheet notes for you to view as an example:

duty assignments

once we conclude duty training and ensure that each student has correctly filled in their duty fill in the blank sheets, we allow the students to choose their duties for the 6 weeks. depending on the number of students we have, we typically have 1-3 salon managers who are responsible for small duties in the salon, completing the duties of students who may be absent for the day, and overseeing and checking off the other students as they complete their assigned duties.

(In each duty area, we have duty instructions on the wall posted in that area as a reminder of what steps should be taken to Thoroughly complete that duty! we are very organized and strategic with the duty process in order to ensure that students know the expectations and to ensure that duties are being done correctly!)

managers are assigned a clip board with a duty chart on it! the duty chart includes a chart of each duty and the students name assigned to that duty. as i stated earlier, one of the responsibilities of the manager it to oversee and check off the students duty areas as they finish cleaning. managers must give the students either a ✅ if the duty was done correctly or a ⭕️ if the student needs to go back and clean or redo one of their duty responsibilities. (we teach the managers how to speak to students Politely and Professionally when asking them to do something that needs to be corrected.) once that student has corrected their area the duty manager will then go back an insert a ✅ inside of the ⭕️ to show that they correctly completed the duty!

in conclusion we check the managers duties and the managers are responsible for checking all student duties. (of course, we still oversee everything) . they take their job seriously because they know that their grade depends on ensuring that they manage professionally and ensure the duties are done correctly. if students are given a ✅ that means the manager has ensured that those duties were done correctly, or else they realize that points will be deducted from their grade. students also understand that in order to receive a 100 on their duty grades, the manager must have given them a ✅.

we do our best to reassign duties every 6 weeks so that everyone has an opportunity to be a manager, as well as complete all of the duty assignments in the salon.

below i have attached the duty assignment chart that each manager receives:

duty process

below i will explain our daily duty process and how we complete it to be as organized as possible and ensure student success!

at 12:55 each day, we have our managers to begin cleaning their work areas. they get 10 minutes to clean up while everyone else continues working on their practical assignments for the day.

at 1:05 we (the teachers) check off the student managers work areas and the managers announce “work area cleanup time”. At this time all students have 10 minutes to clean and disinfect their work area and tools for the day! managers are doing their assigned duties at this time. once the timer goes off and students are done cleaning their work area, they are to be standing at the work area until checked off by a manager.

at 1:15 the managers quickly check off everyones work area and announce '“duty time”. All students then go to their assigned duty area and begin completing their duties as managers oversee and assist as needed. students have 10 minutes to complete their duties. they must stand in their assigned duty area and wait to be checked off BY THE MANAGERS.

once all student duties have been checked off it should be 1:25. the students are to go back to the work area with their practical application folders and complete their practical application sheets and exit ticket for the day. class ends at 1:32.

once students have left, we do a final walkthrough of the salon and grade accordingly.

conclusion

this process works great for us. yes, the whole process does take about 30 minutes, but it’s worth it and teaches the students the importance of duty time and Responsibilities. the managers take pride in their roles and the students want good grades so everyone typically does what they are supposed to do! adjust the times as needed for you, but Definitely Try implementing something like this into your classroom and tell me what you think.
