milady chapter 3: your professional image activities

CHECK OUT THESE SHORT, EFFECTIVE, AND ENGAGING Professional image ACTIVITIES TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR CHAPTER 3 LESSON!

BELOW I HAVE COMBINED MY LESSON ACTIVITIES FROM THE COURSE OF A 2 WEEK TIME FRAME (I SEE MY INTRO STUDENTS EVERY OTHER DAY!) INTO 1 GOOGLE SLIDE PRESENTATION FOR YOUR Convenience. UNDER THE PRESENTATION I WILL PROVIDE BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OR DIRECTIONS FOR EACH ACTIVITY!

Why study “My professional image”

as an introduction activity for this chapter i start with a short writing activity that requires the students to journal. they must Write a short paragraph about why it is important to dress appropriately, speak politely, and conduct oneself in a manner appropriate for work. after they have written their paragraphs, i select Volunteers to share and i also pick a few students with my name sticks to ensure that i am calling on a variety of students. we then discuss their responses together as a class. Following our discussion, we will review the “why study” section at the beginning of the chapter (milady).

personal Hygiene vs personal grooming!!

I like to start this section of the chapter by simply having the students to do a turn and talk with a table partner, discussing what personal hygiene is. After a few minutes of Discussing with their partners, we conduct a class discussion, and I give them the textbook definition for personal hygiene. following this i have them to create a personal hygiene pack. to complete this activity they must simply insert pictures of each personal hygiene item they feel should be included in a personal hygiene pack! (below i have attached the directions i display on the screen and the personal hygiene pack activity.)

once the students have filled their hygiene packs, I display a few on the projector and we discuss items that are necessary for hygiene and the importance of personal hygiene in general, Especially as a salon professional.

following this conversation, they complete another turn and talk discussing what personal grooming is. After we differentiate between personal hygiene and grooming, i conduct a “quick check” to check for understanding by having them to take out a sheet of paper and write in big bold letters personal hygiene on 1 side and personal grooming on the other. I then display images and the students must determine if the image represents hygiene or grooming by holding up their paper to display the correct term.

during another class period for a quick review activity i have them to tell me the difference between the two terms and give an example of both. (slide 22 in slide presentation)

Professional image

we begin this section of the chapter by discussing what professional image is and reviewing the bullet points from this section of milady (slides 23 and 24 of slide presentation). Afterwards, i display examples of business professional vs business casual and we discuss the difference between the two. TO check for understanding, I display images on the board of women and men dressed in different types of clothing. the students must give me a thumbs up or down depending on the question i ask. FOr example, “Are these women dressed appropriately for work in a professional business setting?…Are these men dressed appropriately for work in a business casual setting?”

we discuss what appropriate work attire looks like and what is not acceptable and the reasoning. I also ensure to include salon professional dress code discussions.

fyi: i think it’s very important to take the time to discuss what under garments are appropriate for certain outfits for women and men. FOr example, women should wear black or dark underwear and bras under white or light clothing, etc. (some of our future professionals don’t know)

after we have reviewed the requirements and expectations of a professional image I have the students complete a quick jamboard activity where they must search on google for an image that displays a business professional and business casual outfit that represents their style and insert both on the jamboard along with a stick note by their images so that I can identify everyones. (you can recreate this by using jamboard on google. all you must do is create a jamboard and allow the students access to edit it)

Lastly, for the professional image section my students compete an activity i created entitled “my salon dress code”. for this activity i allow them to either work alone or with a partner. They must create a name for their own salon, tell what type of salon they want to own, describe the environment of the salon, and include a detailed Description of the dress code requirements for the salon employees. they must also Include photos.

i think this activity is a good opportunity to help students to understand that the environment and Professionalism (from the music you play to the clothing you wear) all plays a part in the type of salon that you will have and the clients that you will attract, etc.

following this activity, i allow the students to share their “My salon dress code activities” and we end this section of the chapter by reviewing the professional behavior do’s and dont’s listed in milady (slide 38 in slide presentation)

physical presentation

for this section of the chapter, i display an image that always sparks conversation and gets the students laughing (slide 39 of slide presentation). I ask the students “what’s wrong with the image?”

this starts the conversation about posture and the importance of proper posture and physical presentation.

i then give the students 10 minutes or so to complete the “Physical presentation” activity attached below.

once they have completed it, we discuss the answers to the questions by reviewing the corresponding slides on my presentation (slides 41-43 on slide presentation).

I then take the students in the lab and teach them about the Hydraulic chairs in the salon and how to properly use them. we also discuss the purpose of the salon floor mats, manicure chairs, and other ergonomically created equipment and tools that we use in the salon to help them have a better understanding of ergonomics.

conclusion

THESE ARE ACTUALLY JUST THE MAIN ACTIVITIES THAT I DO IN MY CLASSROOM FOR CHAPTER 3. FOR EACH LESSON I HAVE OTHER FILLER ACTIVITIES THAT WE MAY DO IN BETWEEN SUCH AS MILADY SITUATIONAL PROBLEMS, KAHOOTS, QUIZIZZ, FLASHCARD REVIEWS, 1O MIN STUDY SESSIONS, CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS, ETC..

for chapter 3 i also include several professional dress days as test grades.

Once We Have Completed All Of These Activities We Take The Chapter 3 Test And Begin Chapter 4.

I HOPE YOU FIND THESE ACTIVITIES HELPFUL! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!! 💙💙💙
