Milady Chapter 4: retailing 101 lesson

need a classroom lesson to help with teaching your students to be successful with retailing in salon?

check out this lesson!

-(what the teacher does):

open the lesson by asking questions about retailing to engage students and spark interest. (examples below)

Example Questions:

  1. what is retail?

  2. what type of retail is sold in the salon?

  3. why are retail products sold in the salon?

  4. how do we as cosmetologist benefit from selling retail in the salon?

  5. do you think you would be comfortable attempting to sell a product to your customer?

Once all questions have been answered and a classroom discussion has taken place, students should have a better understanding of the importance and relevance of retailing in the salon.

- (what the teacher does with the students for engagement):

now ask for a student volunteer to demonstrate selling a retail product to you in front of the class. (give no instruction on how they should do it, simply let them attempt to sell you the product.)

allow classmates to provide suggestions on what could have been done differently!

now you provide necessary feed back and teach students the 3 steps for selling retail products!

basic steps for successful retailing in the salon:

  1. tell what the product is.

  2. explain why the customer needs the product or why they will benefit from it.

  3. demonstrate how the client should use the product.

provide a detailed explanation for each step! (Not provided here)

(check out my video titled “retailing 101: salon edition” on youtube for a detailed Description of the basic steps for successful retailing in the salon…..COMING SOON!)

after teaching the steps for retailing, model how the process should be done in the salon with one of your students. (use an actual product and set the Scenario for students to have the most realistic example of how it should be done.)

-(what the student does to demonstrate understanding):

after your demonstration, students should have a better understanding of how to successfully sell products in the salon. now it’s their turn!!! have your students to pair up and conduct a quick 5-10 minute consultation with their partner. during the consultation they should find out some hair care, skin care, or nail care needs for their partner based off of observations and the consultations they are having! (be sure to enforce positive and professional responses.) once the timer goes off, have both partners to think of 1 product their customer needs and create their “sales pitch” using the 3 steps you taught them earlier! They must write down what the product is, why their client needs or benefits from it, and how the client should use it.

have students to role play and present their Sales Pitches in front of the class, while allowing feedback and constructive criticism from classmates.

-quick check or exit ticket
after presentations and feedback are complete, have students to put all notes away and use a clean sheet of paper to list and explain the 3 steps for successful retailing! collect them and use them to check for independent student understanding of the lesson!

I hope you find this lesson helpful! remember you can always add to the lesson or even take away certain parts that you like and incorporate them into what you already do! make it your own! i love you!

now go educate, inspire, lead, learn, and grow!!!!!
